    Garmin Axis 8" Display

Garmin earlier this week announced the new AXIS flight display lineup which replaces the G3X Touch. The one that caught my attention is the new 8” landscape GDU 80LX ($3,975.00), which is tailor-made as an upgrade for aircraft like ours already equipped with the 7” G3X Touch.

It uses the same panel cutout and mounting holes, and is largely a plug-and-play upgrade from a wiring standpoint. Garmin also allows you to export your G3X Touch configuration and import it directly into AXIS, which should make the transition pretty painless.

The biggest hardware change is the display itself. Despite fitting the exact same panel opening, Garmin increased the screen from 7” to 8”, giving roughly 31% more display area and much higher resolution. That alone should make a noticeable difference for split-screen layouts. The user interface has also been modernized with updated fonts, icons, colors, and graphics. The PFD and MFD layouts look cleaner, synthetic vision has been refreshed, and the embedded map and widget presentation appear much improved.

With the Icon being an SLSA technically we need their blessing to install the AXIS... The larger screen is shipping now, but the 8" ships in early 2027. Note that unlike the larger screens, this one does not feature a built in IFR FMS.

    Marcus,

I wonder if that will happen? As a new Icon owner, I’m not really up to speed on how the new company operates.
