Man! lost the whole tail, very interesting. Just when you think you have seen everything...and I have seen a lot on this topic. This is one of those "Great Lakes" 916iS upgrades too. Lost oil tank hose, all the oil, subsequently an engine failure which doesn't take long with no oil about 4min max. Not a ICON production plane. Looks like a quality issue with how the hoses are fabricated. Sheesh.

Interesting! You either have a good eye Bret, or more information than the rest of us on this. I’m glad it’s not an Icon production issue. Sucks for the owner though. Would this be classified as “experimental”?

This was news to me. but this plane is ICON A5 S/N 172 and was converted to the Great Lakes Edition with a Rotax 916iS https://www.iopa.org/threads/298-Gre...ull=1#post1558 Which is done by some company up in midwest not ICON.

The only way to do that prior to MOSAIC ruling is to turn the aircraft Experimental LSA (this one was converted before MOSAIC). The weird part is looking through this particular aircraft's operating limitation is says to use the previous aircraft operating instructions. That's not exactly possible as they have added a constant speed propeller and 160 HP turbo normalized engine. In other words they have shopped around for the DAR that would do it.

So yes this aircraft is an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft. The part I don't get is aircraft doesn't meet the definition of light sport aircraft. All this information is publicly available on the FAA website.
