    Using flaps on land?

    Anyone use flaps on land? I know poh says flaps only on water. I’ve recently heard that some Icon pilots are using flaps while landing on land. One says he only uses flaps on land with a passenger, landing only.

    Just wanted to hear some feedback on the subject.

    Whether or not I use flaps depends on what type of landing roll I’m looking for. If I want to make that earlier turn off I’ll use flaps for example.

    I think it lands better flaps up on land just a personal opinion.

    The poh says to use flaps up for normal operations. But to use flaps on soft and short fields. On the short grass strip I fly out of we always use flaps. On a big runway usually flaps up.

    The intent for normal operations one is up the other is down. So gear is up and flaps down for water. Gear down flaps up for land landings to help as a reminder for correct position in an amphib.

    I teach all configurations. But strongly reccomend against flaps up landing on water unless training or malfunction.

    The one up other down is a good way to think about it. Thanks for your tips.

    On water, soft or short field was never a question for me. I’ll use flaps. Still getting used to the plane. This will be my second season.

    I use flaps for takeoff and landing. I fly it like it’s a regular airplane seems to be just fine. I think they designed that no flap thing because they’re used to non-pilots flying. That’s my only guess.

    Depending where you are. Be happy to review and maybe show you some new things. I have a great area here in houston we can do lake and river flying. Have a few river areas down in windy canyons that are challenging.

    I have definitely noticed that with two grown occupants, 15 degrees of flaps greatly reduces stick pressure and shortens the take-off roll. It also, in the same CofG condition, allows less trim use for landing. other than that, I follow PoH recommended settings for flaps.

    My understanding is : with gear down/flaps up , gear up/ flaps down, you get the same sight picture for landing. Not sure where I heard this, but possibly the first instructor I had on the icon. I occasionally land flaps down on runway, but can't really tell if sight picture is that different.
