    Oshkosh 2024 - July 21 to 27

    Hello Everyone,

Oshkosh is coming-up fast. I will be there with 324MN and was wondering who else is flying their Icon to the event. We could ask Matt Oxender from Great Lakes Icon to show us his Rotax 916 Icon A5 with Constant-Speed Prop. It would be a blast to see an Icon that can climb at 2,000+ FPM.

Is Anyone planning on being at Oshkosh? Let me know so I can organize a social event!

    Thanks.

Not going to Oshkosh, but that Icon with the 916 sounds cool. Is there any information on it online?

    916 icon

Can’t find much on that icon. Wonder how they did that without modifying cowling and with w&b and stresses etc? Seems weird. But wanna see it!

I don’t know if this is the one, but in second half of video, you see a modified ICON overheat and have to cool down before departing.

Here is a YouTube link with comments to the same video. Some of the comments are from ignorant jealous haters.

If you see an Icon missing a top cowl cover and swinging a 5 blade prop, that is likely one of Matt's. I wonder how he manages to cool it on the ground without the top cowling. The turbo is forcibly located on top so Matt will definitely end up with a bump (Power Bulge) of some kind. Pretty exciting. The W&B line I believe is 4 inches forward of the step or so the 50lb weight gain is very close (12-14 inches) to the Center of Gravity. Maybe he offset by using a bogus passenger weight. It looks in that video like it sits a bit lower in the water.

Be curious to know what his overall performance numbers are with top speed, endurance, range, etc…. Bigger motors increase weight, drag, fuel burn etc…. Would definitely have gitty-up and go!

I have the same questions. I am encouraged by 3 factors: First the 916 is only 50 pounds heavier. That's not a whole lot. 2, prop technology will allow the 916 to really shine in climb and cruise. 3, I believe (could be wrong) that the 916 in ECO cruise is really a fuel sipper. May not be 2.9 G/Hr like my 912 at 4,300rpm but maybe 5.0? That would still be a huge win. Crazy climb, decent (probably sub-100 kt) cruise all day long and 5.0 G/Hr at 55% power. I am very excited to see where this goes. The hard part will be making the power bulge look good. The Icon is a visual work of art. It will be sad if that gorgeous line is affected by a weird looking Engine Top cover. Matt did mention to be that he may have a combo AP and ESI gauge pod to offer us Founders' Edition owners. That is a no brainer for me who has a bit of G3X jealousy.

I agree, can’t wait to see. Yep, A5 needs to stay sexy, or it will look like another SeaRey flying around with engine cover off.
